89-2633 - Pelham Ported Barrel
[Click image for a larger version.]
Pelhams
Design:
Using two reins, the Pelham is a combination between a Dee ring and straight shank. The Pelham has three rings on the shank: the top ring is for the headstall and curb chain, the center Dee ring for the first rein and the bottom ring is for the second rein.
Function:
Operates as both a direct action and leverage bit using a curb strap or chain. With pressure on the first rein, it works as a direct action bit, exerting the same amount of pressure on the mouth as on the reins. With pressure on the second or bottom rein, it works as a leverage bit, tilting the mouthpiece forward and applying pressure to the parts of the mouth, curb and poll.
Usage:
Used in English disciplines.
Options
: Patented bushing system which allows the shank to turn independently of the mouthpiece, purchase and headstall.
The Ported Barrel Mouth Piece (MB 33)
Design:
Curved mouthpiece with upward curve and joined barrel in centre.
Function:
Puts downwards pressure on top of bars, does not collapse on the bars and has no tongue pressure. Each side of the mouthpiece moves independantly. With a low palate, may exert some palate pressure. Turns into a solid mouthpiece when asking for a stop. Offers tongue relief.
Level:
Three
Usage/Solution for:
A mild bit, the Myler Ported Barrel mouthpiece works well with the intermendiate and finished horse. The independant side movement allows the rider to isolate one side and pick up a shoulder. It is a good bit for a stiff horse with little bend, or the horse which gets behind the bridle.
