Eggbutt

Design: A oval shaped ring with fixed attachment of the mouthpiece.

Function: Direct action - applies same amount of rein pressure to the mouth. More direct signal than Loose Ring. Will not pull through the mouth or pinch.

Usage: Used in English and Western.

Options: Hooks are available on Eggbutt Rings. Hooks fix attachment of reins and headstall and allow bit to work like a leverage bit. When reins are pulled upward and backward, mouthpiece rolls downward and backward into the mouth while pulling downward on the poll.

The Mullen Triple Barrel Mouth Piece (MB 32-3)

Design: Curved mouthpiece joined with three barrels in centre.

Function: Puts pressure on the tongue and corners of the bars; collapses slightly on bars and restricts the tongue. Each side of the mouthpiece moves independantly. Turns to a solid mouthpiece when asking for a stop.

Level: Two

Usage/Solution for: The Myler Mullen Triple barrel mouthpiece works well for the intermediate horse. It encourages the horse to break at the poll, keeping him from inverting. The independant side movement lets the rider isolate one side and pick up a shoulder. A good step up from the snaffle, this is a useful bit for horses needing some freedom of the tongue and it offers the rider a sensitive feel.
